About BEDP Environment Design Guide

The award winning BEDP Environment Design Guide (EDG) is a comprehensive source of information on environmental issues in the built environment.

EDG provides reliable, practical information, allowing practitioners to make educated, environmentally responsible decisions during the early phases of design, where the greatest environmental benefits can be effected with the least cost.

The BEDP Environment Design Guide contains a vast body of work with papers on key themes and topics relating to built environment sustainability and the impact of the built environment on the natural environment.

EDG is a subscription based journal which has been expanding for 12 years, and is updated quarterly with 6 papers that cover new information about sustainability in the built environment and revisions of existing papers to keep them up to date. EDG brings together the expertise of renowned Australian authors in over 250 papers, including 45 case studies which cover multiple building types and regions throughout Australia. These papers are peer-reviewed by a combination of practitioners and experts to ensure they are accurate and accessible.

EDG aims to provide building design professionals with accurate, accessible, professional literature on how to reduce the environmental impact of the built environment. EDG subscribers include architects, engineers, planners, landscape architects, quantity surveyors, developers, academics, students, libraries and government and non-government environment/built environment agencies. Interior designers and facilities managers will also find EDG of value.

In producing EDG, BEDP member associations have combined to contribute their resources to address built environment sustainable development issues relating to each of the professions represented by BEDP.

Designers create the future and their decisions determine a building’s environmental impact over its entire life. The right decision costs less during the design phase than at any other point in a building's life cycle. The BEDP Environment Design Guide gives you the information to make those decisions.

Users of the EDG are strongly encouraged to provide feedback on the papers and case studies and to make suggestions on issues they would like to see addressed. Comments and contributions can be directed to the BEDP Environment Design Guide Manager.  See the Contact page.

HISTORY

The BEDP Environment Design Guide is a product of the Australian Council of Built Environment Design Professions (BEDP) and is produced as a service to the members of its constituent organisations and to the wider community.

In 1995 the RAIA Environment Design Guide was developed as a resource by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects in order to equip their members with the knowledge needed to accord with the RAIA Environment Policy.

Following a move by Engineers Australia to create a similar resource it was agreed to combine the knowledge of the 8 professional peak bodies that form the Australian Council of Built Environment Design Professions or BEDP.

Since 1999 EDG has been a product of the BEDP.  EDG has a Planning and Development Committee which is constituted of representatives from the BEDP member organisation.  This committee oversees the development of EDG and the relevance of content to the individual disciplines.

PAPERS AND SCOPE

EDG papers cover a broad range of pertinent environmental issues and design solutions, each written by an authority in the field. EDG case studies critique projects that feature key environmental design elements. Both the papers and case studies are subject to 2 blind peer reviews unless stated otherwise.  It is the review process that gives EDG its quasi-academic standing and maintains the high standard of delivering accurate and accessible information. EDG papers aim in 2000-4000 words to introduce and discuss a particular issue. Each paper has a single page summary sheet which notes key points and references.
