The Millennium Parklands

Anne-Marie Willis

Millennium Parklands is a large-scale, long-term landscape design project that was given impetus by the Sydney Olympics.  The challenge has been how to create an environmentally exemplary place out of very unpromising raw material: a former industrial and waste disposal site, much of it contaminated. Approaches taken include in-situ remediation, reinstating a creek that had been turned into a stormwater drain, creating new wetlands that double as irrigation water storage, the use of engineered soils and a planting regime that interprets the former landscapes.
