The Scottsdale Forest EcoCentre is a building within a building, largely constructed of steel and local plantation pine. The space between the two skins allows solar heating in winter and natural ventilation in summer, while retaining effective daylighting. It also provides an opportunity for forestry-related planting, further modifying internal conditions. A down-draught fan recycles heat from upper levels in winter. This strategy is projected to save 80% energy use over a conventional air conditioned solution.
